We have been here before. When the Clintons attempted to reform health care the same..I mean the same..run a Nexus search, attacks. Misinformation funded by the interests most responsible for the failure of private insurance and consequently health care. The Medicare system operates extremely efficiently. We do not hear that mentioned.
Health reform will never come while the corporations run the government. Of, by and for the people has been sold for the princely sum of 9 to 5 and a two car garage. While you are able to work and you don't need insurance it is affordable. What about when you are not able to work ? What happens when you are too sick to work ? The way it stands now, if you recover your finances will not..
so what would happen if the little guys like me could really get reform. Even if all we could get is the sell out piece of crap that is currently proposed by the demoblicans and republicraps.
1. The first thing that would happen is nothing at all. If you have a plan your happy with, one that you can afford you can keep it. As is.
2. Consumer protection, which is a nice way to say working folks. Or pretty much everyone with or without a job. I hope I didn't leave anyone out. If you have a pre-exsisting condition, you cannot be excluded from coverage. No recissions--none. The insurance company cannot take your premiums and deny your coverage because you forgot to include the 3 stitches you got on your elbow when you were 9 years old.
3. Bankruptcy will plummet. Out of pocket caps of 5,000 dollars for individuals.
4. Business doesn't get a free ride. If you have employees will either have to offer insurance or contribute to the system. Medicare and medicaid have been a subsidy to business in the past. Low tech workers that get little or no insurance will be covered.
I wonder what it would have been like. I wonder what would have been.

Ok, I was wondering what to call the economy ? If the current state of affairs includes the wall street outlook then the forecast is gloomy. Recession bordering on depression. I wonder what real changes are happening ? We seem to be getting good at blowing our disaster whistle. Our champions of industry are out front in the bushes puking already. If the current climate continues the same jerks and criminals will be rewarded for more bad decisions. What the greens envision is a gradual move to the steady sustainable economy. TVA Coal Waste

One of the ways we identify ourselves has to do with location. For the few people who don't know, TVA came into being during the 1930's to combat the depression in the Tennessee Valley. That Act brought electrification, water navigation, flood control and a host of desperately needed improvements. Dear god what has happened to us. We have whole communities threatened with poisons. Our public servants are spin masters and the drinking water and public properties the TVA was charged with protecting has turned into profit centers for yet more corporate greed.

A note to president Obama and Lisa Jackson:

Label coal ash as hazardous waste

Retrofit all coal ash ponds and coal ash landfills with composite liner systems

Require a complete and accurate inventory of coal combustion waste (CCW) sites, including abandoned sites

Issue public advisories on the hazards posed to communities by all CCW sites

Relocate and reimburse local residents impacted by the sludge

Mitigate damage to local water supplies and establish a local environmental advocate to monitor water quality

I got to see the grand canyon 3d film at the IMAx. WOW, what an incredible film! If you don't get the chance to see any other film at the Imax, go see this one. The film craft at its very best. Breath taking shots of the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon, too.
while the movie talkover candy coats it, I won't; we are going to lose the river. The problem is GROWTH. We are consuming at a break neck speed. Everytime you go to WallyWorld and buy produce from the west coast you are sticking your straw in the river. Lake Powell is the bellwether sign. It has lost half of its volume in just twenty years. The southwest is suffering a terrible drought now, and demand (growth) on the water resources of the river are increasing. Hello !?!

Coal can be called anything but clean. Yes it does account for a major portion of our power generation in the U.S. Coal is not clean , the "hype" by the industry is miss leading at best. The lion's share of carbon dioxide emissions are from coal. The main culprit in greenhouse gases is CO2. Mountain top removal is is an immoral stain on this country. Anyone who supports it should be prosecuted as godless criminals!

THe very best that the indrustry can hope for is reducing the footprint of preventable deaths(about 24,000 per year), and deadly toxic emissions of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, mercury and nitrogen oxides. Policy and technology have to work together if we are going to reduce coals impact.

Democraps and Republicraps are not going to make the difficult decisions that are needed.

The Green Party is the only hope we have in our body politic not beholden to or outright owned by the business they are supposed to be regulating. We have a plan ready to change business as usual. I would urge you to read about The Earth Charter

I am especially burdened here in Chattanooga, our representative says,"We are at war with Islamic jihadists, fundamentalists, radicals. We need to be more clear as to who we are fighting. Frankly, my view is that this is a religious conflict." We cannot allow this crusade to continue?! These distinguished murderers should be impeached and imprisoned at the least. Impeach Bush and Cheney, we can throw Wamp in jail to keep them company. You might be able to see just how dangerously misguided Zack is. He is a small player in a greater sea of greed and destruction.

I am wondering why I even bother. Chris Lugo is the only candidate in Tennessee that I can vote for. Elephants and Mules are not much different from one another. Both support the war in Iraq. A clearly criminal action on the part of the U.S.A. Both think taxes are some kind of sacred montra. If you cannot pay for your everyday needs, what does it matter ? Both have signed off on the patriot rejection act. Both think we need jobs. Frankly we can pull the headlines for the past 25 years and substitute the current dates. We have seen it all before.

Lebanon is being systematically dismantled by one of the world's most fearsome military machines, and the bombs are not just wrecking Lebanese infrastructure and killing Lebanese children: They are also making a shambles of US credibility in the Middle East. Washington's effort to pose as an even-handed broker in the Arab-Israeli conflict has always been a ridiculous affectation, but George W. Bush's reaction to the war that started on July 12 has set new standards for a public fiction that no one likes to mention. In essence, Bush and his administration have decided that the primary goal of US policy at this juncture should be to buy time for Israel so it can keep pummeling its hapless neighbor. At the same time, however, the United States claims an unshakable commitment to the Lebanese people and professes to be concerned about the survival of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's government.
In all fairness, what of the Israeli people? No one expects them to choose new leaders who will grovel and cower like those who accepted abuse in Europe until the Holocaust forged a very different attitude, but most of the policies pursued by Israeli governments since 1948 have served only to maintain the enmity of the Jewish state's Arab neighbors. Parents should not have to fear for their children's lives because their leaders are obsessed with proving how tough they are.
Ironically, it is America, Saudi Arabia's longtime protector, which made Shiite empowerment possible by overthrowing Saddam Hussein and bringing Shiite parties to power in Iraq. The Bush administration seems to recognize what it has done; as the Shiite arc rises in the east of the Arab Muslim world, the US is attempting to strengthen its protection of the Sunni arc - Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia - in the region's west. Israel, the once implacable enemy of the Arab cause, now seems to be slotted into this defensive structure.
But such a defensive posture is bound to be unstable, due to pan-Arab feelings. Today, ordinary Saudi citizens are glued to Al-Jazeera and other Arab satellite TV networks to follow events in Gaza and South Lebanon. They see Arab (not Shiite) blood being shed, with only Hizbullah fighting back. In their eyes, Hizbullah has become a heroic model of resistance.
This is causing the Saudi state to deepen the Sunni- Shiite schism. Following the kingdom's official denunciation of Hizbullah, the Saudi state called on its official Wahhabi clerics to issue fatwas condemning Hizbullah as Shiite deviants and heretics. Such condemnations can only sharpen sectarian divisions within Saudi Arabia and the region.
As these antagonisms deepen, will the Sunni regimes come to believe that they need their own Hizbullah to fight in their corner? If that is what they conclude, they need not look far, for many such fighters have already have been trained - by Al-Qaeda.

We are dependent on the middle east for about 19% of our current consumption. The loss of even one soldiers blood is too high a price. This war we are waging in Iraq, is criminal. There is NO lasting democracy at the end of a gun. None. We can shake off this thirst for oil. Brazil is leading the way. Venzuela is following right behind them. FYI we buy a major portion of our oil imports from Venzuela. That translates to 568,944 barrels for fiscal 2004. More from our nieghbor Canada 782,598 , Mexico with 609,225 barrels of oil, Nigeria sold us 417,152 barrels of oil. Of the total imported oil 912,447barrels came from the Persian Gulf. Thats roughly 19% of our yearly supply. This information is available from Gov. Here Now I point this out because war for oil is the reality. We can turn our nations will to the production of alternative fuels and be energy independent in less than 5 years. We can be energy independent with exsisting technology!

Ethanol E10 blend and E85 run today in most modern cars. Biodiesel runs our trucks, without ANY modification to our diesel engines.More FYI, it has more available BTU's so it goes a bit further than dino diesel. It is a better lubricant for our motors. Biodiesel is nuetral on the environmental front. 0 net carbon!

Lets address the "Elephant in the room", this country can cut our current use by half through conservation measures. We must reduce our free wheeling attitude! It will happen for us.Now the question is by how much we must cut back? That is yet to be determined and will be a direct proportion of what changes we make in supply.

We have watched as Exxon reported the largest profit by a corporation in history recently. Does anyone think that is going to go down? Anyone?

Now most liberal groups and activist groups are not in the least suprised. We expect the administration to ignore the law. What has me so sad is the lack of outrage at the DNC and the GOP barns. There was no known connection to Al Queada prior to Our invasion. We are free to torture prisoners in iraq, least till caught and the only people punished are the enlisted folk stupid enough to pose for pictures. Enlisted only one officer scapegoat indirectly in the chain of command. We declare major hostilities over and continue to lose soldiers, the count now more than 2000. Paid reporters for the favorable reporting. The diplomat that the CIA uses to checkout the yellow cake story in africa gets gutted publicly for reporting the truth about the fake story. Turns out the vice presidents staff calls reporters to out a covert agent of the CIA as a means of attacking same diplomat that called the yellowcake story a fabrication. We are still waiting on the investigating attorneys case against the presidents staff. Did rove commit treason? Not charged yet, but the investigation is still going on. And todays revelation about the NSA authorized by secret presidential order to spy domestically, on us!@#?!! Does the DNC go off? How about the RNC, surely some small thread of decency or respect for the laws of the land. I know both parties have read the bill of rights in the constitution. So if you were counting on eating a breakfast at school, well I would think about stocking up at the food bank on breakfast foods. Oh yea, snd if you were going to the clinic for your flu shot, well might better go straight over to the e-room and wait. No you are not elegible for a student loan. No it does not matter how much. Wasn't it the holy roman catholic church that started the reformation rolling? Or maybe it was all the poor christians that couldn't afford to buy their way into heaven. What!? You cannot buy your seat at the table? Really? You mean all the words that mathews writer reports of jesus about the poor, and strangers and the homeless and widowed, the visiting of the sick and those folks in prison he meant literally? No way. The sick maybe, atleast the sick with diseases that are approved by the church as ok to have and die from.Those sick, maybe if it fits into the weekly schedule. But no way do the poor deserve anything. The lazy good for nothings are just sucking off the governments tit. They don't deserve anything. Besides we already made a large sacrifice for our church, and let me just say the new building is going to be beautiful. Surely folks don't expect anymore from us. I mean with the tithe we are making and our commitment to the building fund, we will have to cut our vacation short. Mathew surely didn't understand how hard it is to find time for everything what with how busy our church social group is. Did I mention how beautiful the new church building is?

I get to see those huge churches and wonder how many meals for the poor could be fed. It boggles the mind how selfish we have become. We really are the wealthiest nation this world has ever known. And yet we have growing group of folks falling into poverty. We have the most expensive medical system in history, and have some of the worst healthcare on the globe. The WHO reports are pretty sad. We are the most selfish country on earth. I hope the call for universal healthcare in the U.S. gets heard. Christ is a LIBERAL. Will we wakeup in the morning and drive our SUV to work? Will we make eye contact with the person holding the sign, maybe give them a buck? Wonder what would happen to the homeless population if we spent all that effort feeding them that we put into fund raising for the new buildings our churches have to have?

The geography of Wash.,D.C. needs to be greened. Make anyone entering the halls of government swear to protect and defend the PEOPLE of the United States! Yes I know that currently it reads more like protect and defend the corporations and lobbyist that pay you, but that does not have to continue. All the money and power on the globe cannot give Cindy Shehan her son back. All the well wishing in the world won't fix the horrible wound to our nation by the republicrats/demoblicans.
We went to Iraq for the access to OIL! If the gas companies are going to manipulate government , lets throw the lot of them in jail! We should be on the fast track to sustainable fuels, renewable and enviromentally sound energy. Biofuels, wind and solar are the future, they should be the present! I am always befuddled by people and the way they react to conflicting information. A word here, I am a green, I liked and disliked the last demopublican in the white house. Bill the former pres. got labeled (deserved or not is a much longer post on another day) with, "He believed it right up till the point when he took the opposite position." Having said that Demo or Rep. matters little to me, I am a green. Back to the original comment though. If I point out that the corporate media serves a whole lot of mushroom growing media to us from editors and owners with an axe to grind, boy do the conservative rights come appart. That said I am especially pissed that more of my so-called christian brothers keep calling themselves conservatives and right wing. Smoky Mountains

I just got back from a short holiday in the Smokies. It was beautiful, what I could see of it. I was struck with awe at the power nature holds balanced. If retirement ever comes to my house, these are the mountains I belong in. This does have a bitter sweet edge though. When I cannot see the other side of the valley for the air quality, I just want to cry. If folks will support the green party in the political arena, this will stop and every effort to repair this environmental disaster will be forthcoming. While we were hiking on a very popular trail (Laurel Falls), we happened along a black bear and three cubs. We were a lttle above and up wind from them. It was a very pleasant moment to observe with my family. The smallest one talked about it at lenth for the rest of the hike, including everyone we met on the trail going up and down. Nature is good, nature is very good. It restore my soul, indeed.

I know it has been a couple of weeks. Please forgive me. I hope we can get the new Green Party of Tennessee website up shortly. It should be a refreshing new look, with more content, more often. Right now we are waiting to get the host ok. Then it should be mounted on the server there after. Keep checking http://tn.greens.org
My usual rant about the bush admin. is not going to happen. The folks that are going to vote for him are going to ignore this blog. If the corporate media are not going to crucify the liars and pack of murdering thieves, then my 2 cents worth is just preaching to the choir.
How about I let everyone know what is happening in the area. Check out the Green Party local at the riverpark by greenlife grocery on the 26th at 4 pm. We are getting together to talk about the state convention. We made some changes in the state platform, and added some to it. Come at4pm and we can talk about it more. Stay after for the UDJ meeting if you can.
I need to add a note here about recycling. Most of you greens recycle, the city comes by and picks it up curbside once a week. Recently that program changed. The new program is opt in, so call 311 and let them know. If you already have, you know that all paper plastic and metal goes in the same bag. No glass though. Do NOT throw it in the garbage, pile it up in a bag or box and take it to Orange Grove, middle valley recreation or hexane high school glass recycle drop off. We do not need it in the landfill. I remember in an old mother earth news something about building with glass. Umm.. I will look it up in the archive and post something next time. If you have a diesel vehicle I hope you are running bio. B20 can be found at midnite oil right in front of the Benton oil company on bonny oaks. About all for this time. I am going to make a concerted effort to write more about the green party, we are the only peace party. We have a real future to offer to Chattanooga and the country.

Council of thugs

So the city council may be thugs with a little t. It just has got to make you wonder though, what were they thinking? What? Let me see, two policeman beat one homeless guy senseless. That seems straight forward, policeman use excessive force. Not anything new here in Chattanooga. Chief Parks fired them. Got to figure these two policeman are canned right. We all thought so. Somebody forgot to tell the city council. The ex-policeman are back in the blue cruiser again. DUH!! If you fool me once and you get caught, well that is bad. If I invite You back to do it again, now who looks the fool? I am just dumbfounded, like a bad medicine head. What could the council be thinking?
I can tell you what should be happening. The good folks of Chattanooga should be happy to toss these rascals out on their behinds. If a clean slate of candidates includes the best the Chattanooga Green Party can put before the voters, it is just that much better. I am saddened and angry that this kind of same old same old happens over and over. How can a population like ours elect the same kind of immoral curs again and again?!
Please folks wake up! These bandits are in the running to line their own pockets period. If some small part of the voters in their district get a handout , that's ok. But do not be confused, these people are here to fleece the public, not serve it! Take a good look are the Green Party. Grassroots Democracy, everyone deserves a say in the decisions that effect their lives. It behooves us to rid ourselves of the Chattanooga city council in Toto. Clean the whole house.
If the only people who have rights live up on the mountain, then none of us are safe. Where is social justice in Chattanooga?

Just a little note about the mayoral runoff. I pinched my nose and voted for Littlefield. He had the labor endorsement. I did not like the "pick a demo or another demo" choice a was forced to make. My conscience compels me to vote, always. The green party will put up candidates in Chattanooga. We need to get busy on the organizing and fund raising fronts.
I cannot begin to express my joy with coming of spring!!! The garden is coming along and life is waking up from the long sleep of winter. I am shaking off the grey shroud myself. Oh Yea!
Nature is good, Nature is very good!!!
P.S. This is a big THANK YOU to the SORBA trail crew at Booker T. Washington State Park, the mountain bike trails are awesome. I have already managed to blow an inner tube and the spring is just getting started.

so maybe I am a little bit excited. Finally even the repulicrats could not stomach the "clear skies " legislation. I do not believe for a minute that the large utilities, read largest polluters! are going to give up, but even a small victory in the current pro-business admin. is a win, having said that I feel better. Now what? Am I the only one in the city screaming at the radio? I learned while on my way home that Chattanooga has found recycling to be inefficient, not cost effective ? Duh ! As long as recycling is voluntary in the city, what did they expect ? We desparately need to elect greens ! Encourage everyone you know to get involved! I really need to get into the garden. If it will just warm a little bit more.!!!!???!!! I can taste those early peas, oh so sweet!!! Ok, everybody make nice with the nature goddess, please come on spring!!

State of depressing union

Ok so now I am plain old sad. I was watching the President say his speal and it was depressing. I couldn't quite figure out how the poor and low income families were going to claim the tax credit for health care , when the poor can not afford to pay for it to begin with! Please somebody explain that to me? I guess some are more equal than others. I did get a real laugh when the gallery started NO, NO, NOing the social security part of the speech. Ok lets just start calling it the 2 party or the corporate party. The reps and dems party. The wallstreet owns my soul party. We need single payer health care! We spend per person nearly twice as much on health care as any other nation on earth, wanna' guess who is near the top of the mortality stats? Hey mister insurance company... shove off! Mister drug, poison pay off the scientist who is testing your poison at the FDA, pharmacuetical company..see ya when you get out of prison. I nearly cry or go into a screaming fit when the dems march out the same tired poop every time! Demos are for the working folks, my ass... Bought and paid for by corporate interests! Please NO-MORE pastey white guys telling us how patriotic the dems are....blah, blah, blah

No One Is There

I am continually reminded by the spirits of fallen friends and enemies of the first and greatest commandment, Love one another with all your heart .... A long time ago I could not turn the other cheek and some days even now I struggle with it. A pagan at heart ? Maybe so but Nature does not turn on itself like we do. How do I tell my sons that violence is wrong and only encourages more? ! Will they listen to me, I wonder? Yes, I say only mad men go to war. What young man or old boy hears anything but the drums, and the pounding rush of his own pulse in his ear? It is an honorable virtue to defend your country and by extension your family. Now ask, where was I attacked ? Who threatened my family, my life ? Is the threat real? Can you do harm to me or mine own? If you tell me the threat is growing and immanent, does that mean I need to heed your warning now or ten years from now? We have been duped by our government on more than one occasion, where a threat was immanent. Is this a just war ? Does the old code of an eye for an eye apply? Was the sermon on the mount written by fools who just don't understand ? All these questions and many just like it struggle into my thoughts. I love my sons beyond measure, without reservation or hold. How can I tell them that our leaders are blind, and greedy? What respect do I give any who would lead the way into the abyss? And who profits from war? 4 and 10 are young yet, can love win?

Sunday Again

Here it is again, I am sure that tomorrow will get here way too quick. Never mind that I just spent a couple of hours among like minded people. Yes, you guessed it the monthly meeting of the Chattanooga Area Green Party. Always a real pleasure for me to sit down and talk about what is happening in the body politic locally. Seems our very own mayor is going to run for the senate seat Sen. Frist is going to give up. I will be impressed if having a taste of power, Sen. Frist really steps down. It will be an interesting compaign to watch. I just wonder how much money the Corker Group has in the treasury. It makes me wonder if all the "legal commercial property" the group has sold will end up funding a candidates senate run? Oh well I guess that question will have to wait till the mayor does not have a conflict of interest. You can fill in where I am going with this. If Tennessee votes for the mayor then we get what we deserve. How much money or influence does it take to be elected ? Does the two party system ever elect anyone that votes their conscience?

Yes it is late for me. My wife is watching the Auburn vs. Virginia Tech bowl game. I am the proverbial sports widow. I have developed a taste for soccer on the tube. I just cannot force the football watching. Makes me fall asleep. I guess there are too many breaks in the action. Ok it is late and I am not on my usual soap box. She is the love of my life, the essential other. I wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Despairing the loss and waste

All of our hearts ache for the tens of thousands who lost their lives and loved ones to the tsunami. It was without warning and an unheard of catastrophe. I am hard pressed to get my brain around the scope of tragedy. The only thing that comes to mind is how sorry I am that this has happened.
I am struck by just how tenuous life really is, precious indeed. I just hug and tell my family how much I love them. This may be the last time any of us sees a loved one. I was very encouraged by the international response to the disaster. I was lost for a moment in the sentiment when I heard on the radio the USA was giving 35 million to the relief effort.
I cannot help but wonder how much further 100 billion would go?! Not that my voice can be heard in D.C. but I do hope January elections lead to withdrawal from Iraq. Oil and resources be damned!

Thoughts on December

Ok,
so now I have my shopping done. What's left, I know, ripping open the presents. Well maybe watching the kids rip open the presents. We did this last year too. I might ought to say winter is here. I watched the first flakes fall here in Chattanooga today. Yes I was outside raking a few moments before. If you can imagine a mature man, 44, standing out in the yard with the wind blowing 20 mph+ and about freezing, I looked ridiculous. I guess its ok that it doesn't make it to the compost pile. Read big leaf pile in the backyard here. If I manage to get a garden in the spring I will need the organic matter. I hope to be a part of the community garden a bunch of the greens are planning for this year. I've got some hand tools and extra sweat. I know I should not be sitting around thinking about planting a garden, but I do not always get the Christmas spirit. I do feel moved by the change of season. Bring on the winter solstice.
Maybe the druids will visit? Who knows?

If you are really who you say you are, come home. Did your party leave you at the last right turn? Me too. I woke up feeling battered and bruised. It hurts, it really hurts to wake up and see the compromises and justifying, all at once slammed with my own growing hypocracy. I just kept driving in the same direction with everybody else. We were not changing the landscape at all. We were feeding a giant impersonal machine that needed more. I could justify war to encourage democracy. We have a right to the oil and resources of the rest of the world.
When I looked up, I was not surrounded by friends and loved ones. More like Vampires, feeding at the trough of power. I decided to live a conscious life. You can too.
We live in a great republic, I want my vote to count for something. I believe your vote should count too. I just could not keep doing the same thing. Every time I voted I felt cheated, it didn't matter if my candidate won or lost. I was not voting my heart, I was voting like I was supposed to. No more, I want my vote to count and that cannot happen if I vote like I am blind to the corruption of both major parties.
Grass roots democracy deserves a chance. If we are ever going to have government of, by and for the people I have to vote my conscience. Representatives who represent people and not a corporation or a generous donor, but the public, will get my vote. Oil company executives will never advise our government to put themselves out of business. I doubt the insurance companies or the drug companies will ever suggest single payer health care.
